9-Day Uganda Explorer: Murchison Falls, Kibale Chimps and Bwindi Gorillas
Overview
This is the itinerary for travelers who don’t want to choose between Uganda’s headline experiences. Nine days is enough to move from the thundering waters of Murchison Falls in the north, down through Kibale’s chimpanzee-filled forest, across the open plains of Queen Elizabeth, and finally into Bwindi for a gorilla trek — without any single day feeling like it exists purely to get you from one place to the next.
It’s a genuine cross-section of the country: big rivers, primates, savannah cats, and rainforest, in that order.
The full itinerary
This route works year-round, but the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) make the long transfer days easier and keep chimp and gorilla trekking trails firmer underfoot. Visiting in the wetter months trades some of that convenience for greener scenery, better river flow at Murchison Falls, and noticeably fewer other visitors on the trails.
The drive north to Murchison Falls takes around five to six hours, and most itineraries break it up at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, currently the only place in Uganda where you can track southern white rhinos on foot. It’s a good warm-up for the gorilla trek still eight days away, and a reminder of how close Uganda came to losing its rhino population entirely before the sanctuary’s reintroduction programme began.
From Ziwa, it’s a further two to three hours to Murchison Falls, with arrival timed for check-in before dinner.
Mornings start early with a game drive across the park’s northern savannah, where lions, giraffes, elephants and buffalo are all realistic sightings. After lunch, a launch cruise on the Victoria Nile heads toward the base of the falls, where the entire river is forced through a gap barely seven metres wide before dropping with a force you can feel through the boat.
Travelers who want to see it from above can add a short hike to the Top of the Falls viewpoint, standing close enough to the edge to feel the spray.
This is the itinerary’s longest transfer, roughly six hours via Hoima and Fort Portal. The upside is the changing scenery along the way — from Murchison’s dry savannah into the greener, more cultivated hills of western Uganda, with the Rwenzori Mountains sometimes visible on a clear afternoon.
Kibale has one of the highest primate densities of any forest in Africa, and its chimpanzees behave nothing like Bwindi’s gorillas. They move fast, climb high, and announce themselves with loud calls that echo through the canopy long before you actually see one. Trekking here typically takes two to four hours.
In the afternoon, a guided walk through the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, run by the local community, adds a slower-paced few hours of birding and monkey-spotting to round out the day.
A shorter transfer today, around two hours, brings you to Queen Elizabeth National Park in time for an afternoon boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, where hippos, crocodiles and elephants gather along the banks in numbers that game drives alone rarely match.
A morning game drive across the Kasenyi plains gives one more shot at lion, leopard and the park’s dense buffalo herds before the drive turns south toward Ishasha, where local lions have the odd habit of climbing into fig trees to nap through the heat of the day. From Ishasha, it’s a further two to three hours into Bwindi.
The day the whole trip has been building toward. Briefing at park headquarters runs around 7:30am, and the trek itself can take anywhere from under an hour to most of a day, depending on where your assigned family nested the night before. Once found, you get a strict one hour with them before heading back out.
A gentler day. Many travelers use the morning for a Batwa cultural walk, led by community elders who once lived inside Bwindi’s forest, before beginning the transfer toward Lake Mburo National Park, breaking up the long drive back to Kampala.
A short morning game drive or guided walk at Lake Mburo, Uganda’s smallest savannah park and one of the few where walking safaris are allowed, adds zebra and impala to the trip’s list before the final transfer to Entebbe for departure.
