Special Offers and Last-minute Permits

Special Offers and Last-Minute Gorilla Permits

Gorilla permits have a reputation for being scarce and booked out months in advance, and for the vast majority of travel dates, that reputation is earned. But permits also fall through. A traveler’s visa gets delayed, a group shrinks from eight to five, an operator releases a block it held speculatively and never filled, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority or the Rwanda Development Board suddenly has a permit sitting open for a date that’s a week, or sometimes a day, away.

This page is where those openings get listed, alongside seasonal rate reductions that don’t depend on a cancellation at all. Think of it less as a fixed price list and more as a live board: what’s here changes often, and the only way to know what’s actually available for your dates is to ask.

Why Last-Minute Gorilla Permits Become Available

Permits free up for a handful of predictable reasons, and understanding them helps explain why a genuine last-minute deal is real scarcity being passed on, not a gimmick.

  • A traveler cancels or reschedules, for health, visa or personal reasons, and their already-paid permit returns to availability
  • A group booking shrinks before departure, leaving one or two permits an operator held as a block but no longer needs
  • Park authorities release unsold permits from their own allocation as the trekking date approaches
  • A honeymoon, anniversary or group trip gets postponed, freeing permits that were locked in well ahead of time

None of this is predictable on a calendar. Some months produce several of these openings; others produce none at all, which is exactly why this page works as a live check rather than a static catalogue.

How Our Special Offers Work

We track permit boards for both Bwindi and Mgahinga in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda daily, alongside the block allocations held by our regular trekking partners. When something opens up, whether that’s a cancelled permit or a seasonal rate that’s kicked in, it gets added here.

Because a freed-up permit is still a scarce permit, availability moves fast. An opening that exists this morning can be gone by this afternoon, booked by whoever confirms and pays first. That’s the one real trade-off of a last-minute deal: the flexibility to move quickly matters more than it would on a trip booked eight months out.

Types of Special Offers You Might Find Right Now

Not every offer on this page works the same way. Here’s what each type typically means in practice.

Offer Type

What It Typically Means

Cancelled Permit Release

A permit becomes available again after another traveler’s booking falls through, usually sold at or close to the standard price but on short notice

Low-Season Rate Promotion

A genuine rate reduction during April-May or November, when demand is naturally lower and parks or operators price accordingly

Group Top-Up Spot

A seat on an already-confirmed small group trip, filling the last place or two at a reduced, shared-cost rate

Combo Permit Bundle

A gorilla permit paired with a chimpanzee permit, or a Uganda and Rwanda permit booked together, at a bundled rate

Returning Traveler Rate

A preferential rate offered to past clients booking a new trek during a quieter travel window

Who Last-Minute Permits Suit Best

  • Travelers already in East Africa, or close to it, who can act on short notice without a long-haul flight to arrange first
  • Spontaneous planners comfortable confirming and paying within a day or two of hearing about an opening
  • Budget-conscious trekkers willing to shift their travel dates toward the quieter shoulder-season months
  • Repeat visitors who know exactly which sector or park they want and are simply waiting for the right opening

If your dates are fixed months in advance and non-negotiable, a standard permit booking still serves you better than waiting on a last-minute opening that may or may not appear in time.

What You’ll Need Ready Before You Book

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel date
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate, required for entry to both Uganda and Rwanda
  • A visa already arranged, or the East Africa Tourist Visa, which can sometimes still be processed quickly enough for a short-notice trip
  • A fast way to pay, since most last-minute permits are held only once payment is received, not on a verbal reservation
  • Travel insurance that covers your trip on short notice, given the compressed planning window

Terms Worth Knowing Before You Commit

  • Availability can change within hours and is never guaranteed until payment has been received and confirmed by UWA or RDB
  • Prices shown or quoted are indicative until confirmed; the park authority sets the final figure, not us
  • Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are non-transferable and are issued in the name of the traveler booked, so names must be accurate at the time of payment
  • Full payment is typically required to lock in a last-minute permit; we cannot hold an opening on a provisional basis the way a standard advance booking sometimes allows
  • Standard park cancellation and refund policies apply to last-minute permits, not an extended or more flexible version of those policies

How to Check Today’s Availability

Rather than publishing a price list that’s out of date within days, we check the actual board when you ask.

  • Send us your travel window, how many travelers, and whether you’re open to Uganda, Rwanda, or either
  • We check the current UWA and RDB boards along with our partner operators’ held allocations
  • We come back with exactly what’s available for those dates and the real price, not an estimate
  • If it works for you, confirm quickly, since a genuine last-minute opening rarely stays open long
