Rangers hand out family assignments at Kinigi park headquarters after a briefing that, unlike most park inductions, comes with traditional dancing. The walk climbs from cultivated farmland into bamboo forest on the volcanoes’ lower slopes, usually taking two to six hours there and back depending on the family.
Whatever expectations a first-time trekker walks in with, the hour that follows tends to reset them. Evenings afterward are typically quiet, low-key, and well-earned.

This is the logistical heart of the itinerary. Rather than backtrack to Kigali and fly into Uganda separately, the route crosses directly at the Cyanika–Kyanika border post, a manageable one to two hours from Musanze. Formalities are usually straightforward for travelers with the right visa in hand — Uganda and Rwanda both participate in the East Africa Tourist Visa scheme, which is worth arranging before departure specifically to make crossings like this painless.
From the border, it’s a further one to two hours into Bwindi’s Rushaga sector, chosen for this route largely because it sits closest to the crossing and offers several habituated families, keeping options open if one trek needs rescheduling.

However the first trek went, the second one rarely feels repetitive. Bwindi’s terrain is denser and steeper than the Virunga slopes, the light through the canopy is different, and Rushaga’s families each carry their own reputation among guides for temperament and terrain. Trekkers who complete both treks on this itinerary consistently describe them as two distinct experiences rather than one doubled up.

Two treks in three days is a lot to ask of anyone’s legs, so this day is intentionally light. Many travelers use the morning for a Batwa cultural walk near Rushaga, learning about the forest-dwelling community that lived in Bwindi before it became a protected park, then transfer onward to Lake Bunyonyi, roughly two to three hours away.

Uganda’s deepest lake, and one of the few in the region safe to swim in, since it holds no hippos or crocodiles. A full day here usually means a dugout canoe trip between its scattered islands, one of which carries the grim nickname Punishment Island for its role in a 19th-century practice the guides explain in more detail than most guidebooks do, and an afternoon that finally has nothing scheduled in it at all.

The return transfer retraces the Cyanika crossing, roughly four to five hours door to door depending on border wait times, arriving in Kigali with the evening free.

A final relaxed morning in Kigali, whether that’s a coffee tasting, a last walk through a city neighborhood, or simply packing at an unhurried pace, before the transfer to the airport.
