After the early starts, muddy trails and unforgettable hours with mountain gorillas or chimpanzees, every safari needs a place to breathe. In Rwanda, that place is Lake Kivu. Here the pace slows to the rhythm of paddles in the water. Mornings begin with coffee on a terrace above the lake, afternoons drift by on a boat between quiet islands, and evenings end as the sun sinks behind the mountains of Congo and the lanterns of fishing boats appear on the water.

But Lake Kivu is not only a beach stop. It is a lake with a remarkable geological story, a coastline of hidden bays, terraced hills and coffee cooperatives, a long-distance trail that ranks among Africa’s best walking and cycling routes, and lakeshore communities whose fishing traditions are as old as the lake itself. Three very different towns, Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye) and Rusizi (Cyangugu), each offer their own character.

A Lake Born of the Rift and Volcanoes

Lake Kivu lies in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the Great Rift Valley, where the earth’s crust has been pulling apart for millions of years. Volcanic activity to the north, including the Virunga volcanoes, played a major role in shaping the lake. Scientists believe lava flows once blocked the lake’s northern outlet, which had drained toward Lake Edward and the Nile. The water level then rose until the lake found a new outlet to the south through the Rusizi River into Lake Tanganyika. Today the lake belongs to the Congo River basin, flowing eventually to the Atlantic Ocean. This volcanic history also helps explain why Lake Kivu has fewer fish species than many African lakes and no hippos or crocodiles, making it a popular choice for swimming and watersports.

One of Africa’s Three “Exploding Lakes”

Lake Kivu is one of only three lakes in the world, alongside Lake Nyos and Lake Monoun in Cameroon, known to hold large amounts of dissolved gas in their deep waters. Its deep layers contain carbon dioxide and methane, much of it produced by volcanic and natural biological processes. In theory, a major disturbance could release gas suddenly, an event known as a limnic eruption. Lake Kivu is closely monitored by scientists, and the risk to visitors is considered very low.
Rwanda has turned this unusual feature into an opportunity. Since the 2010s, methane extraction projects near Karongi, including the KivuWatt power plant, have used gas from the lake to generate electricity, while also helping to reduce the long-term build-up of gas. It is one of the most interesting examples of energy innovation in Africa, and the platforms can be seen from the shore near Kibuye.

Kayaking on Lake Kivu

Kayaking is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the lake. Short guided paddles from Rubavu or Karongi suit beginners, while specialist operators offer multi-day kayak journeys along the shoreline between the main towns, camping or staying in guesthouses along the way. Paddling past fishing villages, terraced hills and islands, you experience the lake at its most peaceful. No previous experience is needed for short trips, and guides provide safety equipment.

Swimming and Beach Time

Lake Kivu is widely regarded as one of the safer African lakes for swimming, with no hippos or crocodiles. Rubavu has the most popular sandy beaches, especially along the public lakeshore and at lakeside hotels. In Karongi, many lodges have private swimming platforms or small beaches. Always swim in designated areas, avoid swimming far from shore, and ask locally about current conditions. Some areas near river mouths or with visible gas bubbles should be avoided.

Rubona Hot Springs and Peninsula

Near Rubavu, the Rubona peninsula is home to natural hot springs where local people bathe for their believed healing properties. The area also offers lakeside walks, fishing villages and views across the water. A guided visit is recommended so you can learn about the springs and local customs.

Fishing Traditions

Fishing has shaped life on Lake Kivu for generations. The isambaza fishery supports thousands of families, and the work songs sung by fishermen while rowing keep time, lift spirits and pass knowledge from older to younger generations. Dried and fried isambaza are sold at local markets and eaten with ugali, rice or potatoes. Visitors who meet fishermen at the landing sites gain a real sense of how closely the lake and daily life are connected.

Farming the Steep Hills

The hills around the lake are among the most intensively farmed landscapes in Africa. Families grow bananas, cassava, beans, sweet potatoes, coffee and maize on terraces built to prevent erosion. Cattle remain culturally important, and you may see long-horned cows grazing on hillsides and even on some of the islands. Community walks introduce visitors to farm life, banana beer brewing and traditional cooking.

Local Food Around the Lake

Lake Kivu’s food reflects both lake and hillside. Try grilled tilapia, fried isambaza, brochettes with roasted plantain, beans with rice, isombe (cassava leaves with peanut), and fresh avocado, pineapple and passion fruit. Wash it down with Rwandan coffee, a local beer or freshly squeezed juice at a lakeside café.

Most travellers first meet Kigali through an aeroplane window: a city of red roofs and green ridges rolling into the distance, with roads curving like ribbons between the hills. On the ground the first impressions keep coming. The streets are clean, the pavements lined with flowers and palms, the motorbike taxi riders wear helmets, and plastic bags are nowhere to be seen. Kigali has quietly become one of Africa’s most admired cities, a place where you can walk at night, sip coffee grown a few hours away and meet some of the most welcoming people you will find anywhere.
Yet Kigali is far more than a tidy stopover. It is the place where

Rwanda tells its story, from the tragedy of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi to one of the most remarkable recoveries of modern times. It is home to a fast-growing art and design scene, lively food culture, conference venues of international standard and a monthly tradition of community service found nowhere else in the world.

From Hilltop Outpost to Capital City

Before the colonial era, Rwanda’s centre of power was the royal court, which moved between residences; the best-known royal capital was at Nyanza in the south. Kigali was then a quiet area of hills and farmland. In 1907 Richard Kandt, a German physician, explorer and the first colonial resident of Rwanda, established an administrative post here. His house still stands and is now the Kandt House Museum. After the First World War, Rwanda came under Belgian rule, and the colonial administration was based mainly at Butare (now Huye), so Kigali remained small for decades.
When Rwanda gained independence on 1 July 1962, Kigali was chosen as the capital because of its central location. It grew slowly at first, a modest town of a few thousand residents, before expanding through the following decades.

1994 and the Genocide against the Tutsi

Between April and July 1994, more than one million people, overwhelmingly Tutsi, together with moderate Hutu and others who opposed the killing, were murdered in about 100 days. Kigali was at the centre of these events. Churches, schools and homes across the city became sites of massacre, and the city was left devastated. Understanding this history is essential to understanding modern Rwanda, and Kigali’s memorials preserve it with dignity, honesty and care.

Rebuilding and Transformation

In the decades since 1994, Kigali has undergone one of the most striking urban transformations in Africa. Roads were rebuilt, public spaces landscaped, new business districts developed, and programmes of reconciliation and unity were placed at the heart of national life. Today the city hosts major international summits, sporting events and conferences. In 2022 it hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, and in 2025 it became the first African city to host the UCI Road World Cycling Championships

Kigali sits across several ridges, among them Mount Kigali, Mount Jali and Mount Rebero, with valleys and wetlands between them. The Nyabugogo River flows through the lower areas. Because of the hills, almost every neighbourhood has a view, and sunset from a hilltop terrace is one of the city’s great pleasures.

The altitude keeps temperatures pleasant all year, usually between about 16°C and 28°C. Kigali has two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, and two rainy seasons, March to May and October to November.
. Kigali Genocide Memorial (Gisozi)

No visit to Kigali is complete without the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the final resting place of more than 250,000 victims and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its exhibitions explain the history that led to the genocide, the events of 1994 and the journey of recovery, while a children’s room and personal stories bring the human cost into sharp focus. The memorial gardens are a peaceful place for reflection. Allow at least two hours. Entry has historically been free, with donations welcomed and audio guides available for a small fee.

Kigali City Tour

A guided city tour is the best introduction to Kigali. A typical Trek Gorilla Uganda city tour covers the city centre and the modern Kigali Convention Centre, the genocide memorial, local markets, the Nyamirambo neighbourhood, craft centres and a scenic viewpoint, with plenty of time to stop for coffee. Tours can be done by private vehicle, on foot in selected areas, or by e-bike for a more active experience.

Nyamata and Ntarama Church Memorials

About 30–45 minutes south of the city in Bugesera District, the churches at Nyamata and Ntarama were sites of terrible massacres where thousands of people who sought refuge were killed. Today they are preserved as memorials, with victims’ clothing and belongings left in place. Nyamata is also part of the UNESCO-listed memorial sites. These visits are deeply affecting and give a direct, personal understanding of what happened beyond the city.

By Air

Kigali International Airport (KGL) is about 10 km from the city centre, roughly a 20–30 minute drive. RwandAir connects Kigali with destinations across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and other international airlines fly in directly or via regional hubs such as Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, Istanbul and Amsterdam. Flights between Entebbe and Kigali take about an hour.

By Road from Uganda

Kigali is about 500 km from Kampala, roughly 8–10 hours by road via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale, crossing at the Gatuna/Katuna border. Comfortable coach services link the two capitals, but most of our guests travel in a private safari vehicle, usually with gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga along the way. The Cyanika border, near Kisoro and Musanze, is the most convenient crossing for trips linking Mgahinga or southern Bwindi with Volcanoes National Park.

Ubumwe, Unity and Rwandan Identity

Since 1994, Rwanda has emphasised a shared national identity as Rwandans (Abanyarwanda). You will notice the spirit of ubumwe (unity) in public life, in the national dialogue and in the warmth of everyday encounters. Visitors are encouraged to avoid asking people about ethnic identity, as it is a sensitive subject and discouraged in public conversation.

Umuganda: The Monthly Day of Community Work

On the last Saturday of every month, from about 8:00 to 11:00 am, Rwandans take part in Umuganda, a national day of community service. Neighbours clean streets, plant trees, build homes for vulnerable families and repair public spaces, then hold a community meeting. Traffic and businesses pause during these hours. Visitors can sometimes join in through their hotel or tour operator, an unforgettable way to connect with local life. If your arrival falls on Umuganda morning, we adjust transfers so you are not delayed.

Language and Greetings

A few words of Kinyarwanda go a long way. Try Muraho (hello), Mwaramutse (good morning), Amakuru? (how are you?), Murakoze (thank you) and Murabeho (goodbye). Rwandans often greet with a handshake or a gentle three-way hug among friends. Politeness, calm speech and respect for elders are highly valued.

Most travellers picture Rwanda as a land of misty volcanoes and mountain gorillas, and that picture is true. But drive two to three hours east from Kigali and the country changes completely. The green terraced hills flatten into warm, golden savannah. Acacia woodland opens onto wide grassy plains. A chain of lakes and papyrus swamps glitters along the border with Tanzania. This is Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and the only place in the country where you can see the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

Akagera covers roughly 1,122 square kilometres in eastern Rwanda, making it the largest protected wetland in central Africa and the country’s biggest national park. It takes its name from the Akagera (Kagera) River, which runs along its eastern edge and feeds the park’s lakes before flowing on to Lake Victoria. The park is home to around 480 to 500 recorded bird species, healthy herds of plains game, and a predator and rhino population that has been rebuilt almost from scratch in little more than a decade.

Early Years: A Park Is Born (1934)

Akagera was established in 1934 under Belgian colonial rule to protect the animals and vegetation of three ecological zones: savannah, mountain and swamp. At the time it covered around 2,500 square kilometres, more than twice its present size, stretching across much of the eastern lowlands. For decades it was famed for its large herds of plains game and its lions, and Rwanda’s first generation of safari tourism grew up here.

Elephants from Bugesera and Giraffes from Kenya

Two remarkable translocations shaped the park’s modern wildlife. In 1975, around 26 young elephants were moved, some by helicopter, from the Bugesera region south of Kigali, where human settlement was squeezing them out. They became the founders of Akagera’s elephant population. Then in 1986, Masai giraffes were brought in from Kenya. Their descendants now browse the acacias of the northern plains and are among the park’s most photogenic residents.

Akagera offers a wider range of activities than most visitors expect, and many are designed to show you how the park works, not just what lives in it.

Boat Safari on Lake Ihema

A boat trip on Lake Ihema is one of the park’s signature experiences. Gliding past papyrus-lined shores, you will see pods of hippos, large crocodiles, fish eagles and colonies of waterbirds, with elephants and buffaloes sometimes drinking at the water’s edge. Morning, afternoon and sunset departures are usually available; the sunset trip is the most atmospheric. It is also a welcome break from the vehicle on a warm day.

Camping Under the Stars

Several designated campsites, such as those near Lake Shakani and in the Muyumbu area, let you spend the night inside the park with the sounds of hippos and hyenas around you. Camping can be arranged fully equipped, combining the thrill of the wild with comfort and safety.

Self-Drive and Guided Game Drives

Game drives are the heart of an Akagera safari. The road network runs from the southern entrance through the lake region to the northern plains, and a full north-to-south drive is the best way to take in every habitat. With Trek Gorilla Uganda you travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and an experienced driver-guide. Many travellers also add a freelance park guide from the reception centre, whose local knowledge of where lions, rhinos and elephants have recently been seen is invaluable.

The communities of Rwanda’s Eastern Province share a rich pastoral heritage, and a visit to Akagera is an excellent opportunity to connect with it. Here the relationship between people, cattle and the land runs deep.

Rwanda’s Cattle Culture and the Inyambo

For centuries cattle have been at the centre of Rwandan culture, symbolising wealth, friendship and social bonds. Gifting a cow remains one of the highest honours one person can give another. The most celebrated breed is the Inyambo, a royal cow famous for its enormous, elegantly curved horns. Historically these cattle were trained and groomed for ceremonies and accompanied by poetry and song. In villages around Akagera you can meet herders, learn about traditional cattle-keeping, and taste fresh milk or ikivuguto, a traditional fermented milk.

Imigongo Art – A Unique Eastern Rwanda Tradition

Imigongo is a striking geometric art form unique to eastern Rwanda, traditionally made with cow dung mixed with ash, shaped into raised patterns and painted in black, white and red. Tradition credits its origin to Prince Kakira of the old Gisaka kingdom in the east. Women’s cooperatives in the Kirehe district, south of the park, keep the art alive, and visiting a workshop is a memorable cultural stop on the way to or from Akagera. Imigongo panels make a beautiful and meaningful souvenir.

Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom

In Hoima and Masindi, the history of Bunyoro-Kitara is still alive. With time, you can visit sites linked to the kingdom and learn about its kings, including Kabalega, the Omukama who resisted colonial rule and whose name the falls briefly carried.

Long before the first tea bushes were planted on the hills of southwestern Rwanda, and long before there was a country called Rwanda at all, Nyungwe was already old. Scientists believe this forest survived the last Ice Age when much of Africa’s woodland retreated, giving its plants and animals thousands of years of uninterrupted time to evolve. The result is a mist-wrapped world of giant tree ferns, hanging lichens, orchids, waterfalls and thirteen species of primates, set across steep ridges that rise close to 3,000 metres above sea level.

Today Nyungwe National Park is Rwanda’s largest protected mountain forest and, since September 2023, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the place to go in Rwanda for chimpanzee trekking, the famous Nyungwe canopy walk, serious birding and some of the most rewarding rainforest hiking in East Africa. For travellers coming from Uganda, Nyungwe is also the perfect partner to a gorilla trek in Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park, turning a single primate encounter into a complete great-ape journey across two countries.

Nyungwe is a relic of a much larger forest belt that once stretched along the mountains of the Albertine Rift. Because it stood on high, well-watered ground, it is thought to have acted as a refuge during the dry, cold periods of the Pleistocene, when lowland forests shrank. Species sheltered here and later spread out again, which helps explain why Nyungwe has so many plants and animals found nowhere outside this mountain chain.

The forest was first given official protection as a reserve in 1933, during the colonial period. Over the following decades it faced heavy pressure from farming, wood cutting, mining for gold, hunting and fire, and some edges of the forest were lost. Conservation research gained momentum in the late twentieth century, with studies of its primates, birds and plants revealing just how important Nyungwe was. In 2004 the reserve was upgraded to a national park, giving it the strongest protection available under Rwandan law.

Chimpanzee Trekking.

Chimpanzee tracking is Nyungwe’s headline activity and the reason most travellers come. Treks begin very early, usually with a briefing around 5:00 to 5:30 am, because chimpanzees are most active and vocal at dawn as they leave their nests and travel to feeding trees. The main habituated chimpanzee community lives in the forest near Uwinka and the Gisakura side of the park, while another habituated group lives in Cyamudongo Forest.

Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

The canopy walkway is Nyungwe’s most iconic experience and one of the very few in Africa. The suspension bridge stretches about 200 metres across a deep forested valley near the Uwinka Visitor Centre, reaching around 50 to 70 metres above the forest floor at its highest point. Reaching the walkway involves a guided hike on the Igishigishigi Trail, a gentle trail of about 2 km that passes giant tree ferns and great birding.

Tea Plantation Tours

The bright green tea estates at Gisakura and Kitabi on the park’s edges are some of the most beautiful agricultural landscapes in Africa. A tea experience lets you walk among the bushes, learn how leaves are plucked by hand, and visit a processing factory to follow the journey from leaf to cup. Rwandan tea is known for its quality, and buying it locally supports community livelihoods.

From Kigali by Road

Nyungwe’s eastern boundary is roughly 180–225 km from Kigali depending on which entrance you use, a drive of about 5 to 6 hours on good tarmac roads. The route heads south through Muhanga and Nyanza to Huye, then west through rolling hills and the Kitabi tea estates into the park itself. Breaking the journey with the museums at Nyanza or Huye makes the drive part of the adventure.

By Domestic Flight

RwandAir operates flights from Kigali International Airport to Kamembe Airport in Rusizi, near the southern tip of Lake Kivu. The flight takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and from Kamembe it is around 1 to 1.5 hours by road to Gisakura. This option suits travellers with limited time. Schedules change, so we confirm flight days when planning.

Nyungwe is surrounded by some of Rwanda’s most densely populated farming communities. Life here revolves around tea, potatoes, beans, bananas and livestock, and the forest has long shaped the culture of the people who live beside it.

Traditional Forest Knowledge

For generations, local communities gathered medicinal plants, honey, wild foods and building materials from the forest. Elders hold detailed knowledge of plants used to treat fevers, wounds and stomach problems. Guided walks often include stories of these traditional uses, and community tours sometimes include demonstrations by herbalists. Some families once practised hunting and small-scale gold mining inside the forest; many former hunters and miners now work in conservation, as porters, rangers or guides, a powerful example of how tourism changes lives.

Banda Village and Community Tourism

Banda, a village close to the park, is known for its community tourism project, where visitors can learn about traditional homestead life, food preparation, banana beer brewing, local medicine and dance. Profits support community development and help build positive relationships between the park and its neighbours. Rwanda’s tourism revenue-sharing scheme also returns a portion of park income to surrounding communities for schools, health centres and water projects.

Music, Dance and Crafts

Rwandan culture comes alive in the drumming (ingoma), the energetic Intore dance traditionally performed by warriors, and the graceful movements of women’s dances, which imitate the long-horned Inyambo cattle. Around Nyungwe, community groups perform for visitors, and evening performances can sometimes be arranged at lodges. Local crafts include woven baskets with intricate geometric patterns (including the famous peace baskets), pottery, and banana-leaf art.
