Getting to Bwindi by road eats two full days of a trip before the gorillas even enter the picture. A scheduled light aircraft flight from Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip covers the same distance in under an hour and a half, which turns 3 days from a punishing budget itinerary into a genuinely relaxed one.
This is the itinerary for travelers who want the gorilla trek without sacrificing an entire trip to the drive on either side of it.

Scheduled flight frequency to Kihihi can vary by season, with more frequent departures during the peak gorilla trekking months of June to September and December to February. Flying removes most of the weather-related concerns that affect road travel, though light aircraft schedules are still occasionally adjusted for visibility, so building a little flexibility around Day 1 and Day 3 is sensible.

Day 1: A 90-minute flight instead of a 9-hour drive

Scheduled flights operated by light aircraft carriers connect Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip, the closest airstrip to Bwindi’s Buhoma sector, in roughly an hour to an hour and a half, often with a brief stop at another airstrip along the route depending on the day’s schedule. From Kihihi, a short road transfer of about an hour to ninety minutes covers the final stretch into Buhoma.
Landing in the early afternoon leaves enough daylight for a proper check-in and a relaxed evening, rather than arriving exhausted after a full day on the road.

Briefing at Buhoma park headquarters runs around 7:30am, with rangers assigning trekking groups based on the previous evening’s tracking reports. The walk itself can take anywhere from 45 minutes to six or seven hours depending on where the family nested overnight, and the strict one-hour visit that follows is identical regardless of how you arrived at the park gate.
A porter, typically $15–20, remains a worthwhile addition on Bwindi’s steep, sometimes muddy trails, and the fee supports the local community directly.

A short road transfer back to Kihihi airstrip connects with the return flight to Entebbe, usually landing with most of the afternoon still ahead, in time for an evening international departure or a night in Entebbe before flying out the next day.
